Andrea Illy is chairman of the board of illycaffè S.p.A., the company founded by his family in 1933 in Trieste, Italy.
In 1990 he joined illycaffè as supervisor of the quality control department, where he instituted a total quality control program (“F.A.I. Qualità”). Partly due to this program, illycaffè is today the only international agri-food company that has a dual quality certification: Qualité France for its product, and ISO 9001 for its production process.
After becoming the director in charge of production and quality control, he was named chief executive in 1994, and in 1997 he became chairman of the board of directors.
In 1995 Academic Press published Espresso Coffee: the Chemistry of Quality, a book written by Andrea Illy in collaboration with other specialists and experts. It covers all the scientific and technological aspects of coffee, from cultivation methods to how the product is processed, from roasting to grinding, from packaging to percolation techniques.
In 1996 he was named a “Marketing Superstar” by Advertising Age. Each year this American magazine awards the “Oscar” of the marketing and communications world to 30 managers from around the globe.
In 1999 Andrea Illy became president of the A.S.I.C. (Association Scientifique International du Café—Paris), and organized the XIX Colloque International sur la Science du Café (International Colloquium on the Science of Coffee) in Trieste; he is actually president.
Since 1999, he has been a member of the board of directors of the Italian Association of Premium Brand Industries. Since 2003 he has been member of the Advisory Board of the Bocconi University School of Management.
In 2004 he was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year, prize conferred by Ernst & Young Italia.
