Making noise: The best ways to promote your event

An events success is dependent on general awareness.

What does that mean? Well, it’s not enough to plan a fantastic event. Your target audience should be aware that you are organizing an event that they might be interested in attending. The logic is simple – unless they (target audience) know about the event, they will not register or attend.

The easiest way to build awareness about your event is by actively promoting it. However, promoting your event is not just about spreading the word to as many people who will listen, it’s about focusing on your target audience and trying to spark their interest. Your event has an audience out there somewhere, ready and waiting and promotion is all about getting the message out to them.

Here are some techniques you can use to create awareness about your event:

  1. Rumor Method: Word of Mouth          
    It's a known fact that everyone gossips and rumors spread like wildfire. You can take advantage of this human error by telling a few people from your target group or connected to your target group that your event is taking place. Those people will help spread the word. This form of promotion is most effective with events like concerts that appeal to a large audience.

  2. Online Marketing Today, a large majority of people use the internet as their main source of information. So, if you want your event to flourish you need to have an online presence. Here are some ways to build a presence for your event online:

    Website: The best online tool is a website. Create a website for your event with information about your event – date, venue, price etc. You can also add an online registration facility where interested parties can register and pay instantly. This will enable you to capture and confirm registrations immediately.

    Bulletin Boards: Another effective method of online promotions is by posting information about your event at social networking sites.

    Email: Email Marketing is a form of direct marketing using electronic mail as a means of communicating messages to an audience. It is one of the most powerful marketing tools available today as it allows you to communicate a variety of information regularly within a tight marketing budget. It is extremely cost-effective and when used properly, it can boost your event numbers and sales to a new level.

  3. Advertising
    You can also choose to promote your event using any form of advertising – billboards, newspapers, magazines, TV and radio. There are some factors you need to consider when selecting your advertising medium - who is your target audience, where they are located and which form of advertising will be most effective to communicate your message to them. If your target audience is ‘online’ then you should use some form of internet marketing such as Banner Advertising, Pay-Per-Click etc. For example: You can post banner on the website that your target audience visits most frequently.
